Any ideas for plants/flowers for patio???/?

I am a keen but new gardener and have a small patio area that needs some colour and beauty. I suffer from depression and find it therapeutic. Could you give me some ideas of types of plants to buy (UK) and how to look after them - they need to be low maintenance too. Thank you in advance...
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersThere is probably no better than a sunflower, you can plant them as seeds watch them grow and then enjoy their smiley faces!!!!!!!!!!

Other suggestions would be to plant scented plants, lavender is calming and relaxing

geraniums smell divine and can uplift the spirits

According to Native Indian folk lore white sage and lemongrass will deter negativity and encourage your soul, spirit and mind into a positive place!!

I f you want colour therapy opt for the vibrant uplifting colours, orange + yellows

calming shades of pink or salmon

And remember growing things that you can eat such as strawberries , tomatoes, etc are easily cultivated and gives you a tasty reward at the end!!!!!!!!!!!

good luck and hope these ideas help :0)

Reply:With every respect, don%26#039;t sunflowers grow to about 6-8 feet tall. Perhaps you could combine watching them shoot up to that height with your new basketball hobby :p Report It

Reply:I go for evergreen stuff and ivy as a plant pot filler. Buy the granule plant food and some good soil - they will make a huge difference. Speak to someone in the garden centre I%26#039;m sure they%26#039;ll be pleased to help.
Reply:Go down your local garden centre and stock up on begonias, geraniums and marigolds. Plant them in pots of all different shapes and sizes and all you gotta do is water them now and again (or not at all in this weather!!!)
Reply:Just get some summer flowers - perhaps a mix of daises, pansies and the like. If you go to somewhere like Homebase you should be able to get a mixed pack that will jazz up your patio pots.
Reply:Get something that flowers for a long time, rather than something like azaleas which are spectacular for a week or two, then gone.
Reply:You don%26#039;t mention how much or little sun you get on your patio. If it gets a lot of sun, Geraniums or marigolds. If it gets little or no sun go with impatients.
Reply:Another suggestion are Pettunias. They are very colorful and are very low maintenance. I love the look of pansies and daisies, but the petunnias seem to last longer in the summer months and require very little work. Just stick them in some dirt add a bit of water and you are done. If we have a spell where it doesn%26#039;t rain for a couple of weeks, I will try to water them a little, but other than that they take care of themselves. Another good thing about them is you can get them in almost any color you can imagine.
Reply:I don%26#039;t know if you can find bromeliads or bonsai trees. The bonsais ( to me) just looking at them is soothing and bromeliads are pretty, not scrawny, and easy to take care of.

Bonsais, you just need to give them a little water every now and then

And bromeliads only need a bit of water and some fertalizer if you really want it to look super stellar. Orchids are pretty, but scrawny, expensive, and you need to pay them a lot of attention.
Reply:I have tubs with geraniums and dwarf fucshias and hanging baskets with nasturtiums and lobelia in them. I have a trough with pansies, petunias and allium.
Reply:Chrysanthemums do very well in containers, and in almost any light. They are very easy to care for and come in a large variety of colors. After they stop blooming, just cut them back to about 2 inches tall and they will regrow and bloom again. Just be careful not to over water, I water mine on the same day every week, every Monday. or if the weather is very hot when they start to look wilted. Bulbs are also very low maintenance but need a freeze every winter to bloom the next year.yahoo finance

What kind of plants ,flowers, scrubs are best for my front yard bed in jackson mississippi?

need alot groundcovering flowers
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersYou can grow just about anything in Jackson. Plant things you love. Try parkseeds.com, waysidegarden.com, burpeeseeds.com -- there are many on line.
Reply:is it in shade or sun?
Reply:You need to get some seed/plant catalogues. They have pictures of the flowers and shrubs so you can see what you like. They also will have a map of the US with hardiness zones. Jackson is either in zone 8 or 9. (the map I have at hand is very small).

The catalogues also tell you whether the plants needs sun or shade, rich soil or poor soil, wet or dry soil, etc.

Good luck with your garden.
Reply:for flowering shrubs try spirea they come in many colors there is anthony water, snowmound just to name a few and where you live these can be bought in pts and they are very cheap at the nurseries there thats where a lot of nurseries in tennessee get there plantvisual arts

Dried plants & flowers attracts small insects.how can i get rid of this pest?

i dried leaves %26amp; petals before %26amp; saw some very small insects grow in them..i now want to make a wall hanging with dried flowers %26amp; leaves..i am worried the pests will ruin my creation..wot do i do?

thank u everyone..
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy Flowerstake dried ones and spray transparent paint then paint with bright colours and then apply varnish
Reply:Microwave, then seal with transparent spray paint...
Reply:Try setting up traps, consisting of jar caps partly filled with vinegar and a dollop of dish soap. This will trap fruit flies and may do in your pests as well.
Reply:Those leaves are useless now. Get a new batch and spray them with some nice-smelling insect-repelling scents, like citronella from herbalists or some cosmetics shops works very well, plus it makes your room smell nice too.

PS: DON%26quot;T put it on those insect-infested leaves. It%26#039;ll only make the insects immune. PREVENTION is better than cure.
Reply:I like doing artsie things with plants and stuff from nature and the best way I could think of is after you have your leaves %26amp; pedals dried elaminate them and it won%26#039;t grow bugs in them.
Reply:Try going to your home n garden store.They should b able 2 help u.
Reply:the microwave thing is the best it will kill the insects and you should be good to go.makeup tips

Are there any Plants / Flowers that are toxic to my cat?

My cat likes to go out into my garden and chew on the leaves to some of my potted plants. I am afraid it will make her sick.

Do you know what kind (if any) of garden plants are toxic??
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersOh yeah...TONS. Please be careful. Here%26#039;s a good list from The Cat Fanciers Association:

http://www.cfainc.org/articles/plants.ht...
Reply:There are so many plants and flowers toxic to cats that I avoid them all. Keep kitty away from the garden. Get her some catnip.
Reply:POINSETTIA IS REALLY TOXIC!!!! also lillies are toxic to cats! keep them away from those 2 especially there are many others too.
Reply:If you go to Purina and go to where it says cat and then it will say safety and click on that and then you will see a list of poisonous plants. I hope this will help.
Reply:There are thousands of toxic plants that your cat can get into. Click on this link for a complete list.

http://www.cfainc.org/articles/plants.ht...
Reply:African Violets and Poinsettia are toxic and can kill cat%26#039;s.If it wants to chew on plants get it a catnip plant to chew.
Reply:The first 2 people gave you a very helpful website. Check it out. You can go to any pet store and buy cat grass and just leave that out for your cats to nibble on. My 3 cats love it! You can also grow it too, also found at pet stores. Cats need to chew on green stuff to help aid in their digestion. Cats usually don%26#039;t like the smell of bananas and citrus. Try mixing a soluton of water and citrus/banana extract. Then spray onto your plants, this shouldn%26#039;t hurt them! Good luck!books authors

Why Do Some Plants, Flowers And Shrubs Have Highly Fragrant Leaves...?

Plants and shrubs such as basil, lavender and rosemary all have highly fragrant leaves and I was wondering if there was a reason for this? Can anyone tell me why some plants this, whilst others don%26#039;t?
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersIn the case of herbs it is believed that the leaves are fragrant/scented to repel anything from eating them. This is the case with lavender which deer and rabbits won%26#039;t touch. Rosemary will be nibbled by deer but rabbits leave well alone and lemon balm is not eaten either. Furry leaves seem to be left alone too. Not a nice texture I guess.
Reply:A lot of geraniums are different scented as they are hybird plants. I would think all plants have same ability to produce a fragrance such as rose and lemon,,are many types and a neat one is the mint geranium.
Reply:Some need to attract insects.
Reply:to attract insects for pollination
Reply:Probably because different plants release different chemicals....make up

Where can I find these flowers and plants?

I have this AP Bio project due in two days and I haven%26#039;t started it yet! I need help! Ok I know nothing about plants...Where can I find:

5 types of wildflowers (avoid common ones like dandelion, daisy, etc. and remember that Lady Slippers are protected species.)

5 types of non-flowering plants (moss, fern, lichen, fungi - you may want to wait on getting a mushroom type until right before it is due - except for the shelf fungi they donÕt preserve very well)

5 types of deciduous trees (leaves only)

2 types of gymnosperms (evergreens)

5 types of animal artifacts (no tame house pets; be creative - capture a spider web, take a picture of a footprint or make a mud cast, find an egg casing or a shell, etc.)

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thank you!

Cover plants/flowers during freeze warnings?

Is there anything in particular that WON%26#039;T work when covering plants for freeze warnings (specific types of plastic)? I didn%26#039;t think so but then my husband heard something on the radio suggesting different...
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersPlastic freezes, so you don%26#039;t want to let it come into contact with your plants. Put a layer of newspaper or an old sheet between the plants and the plastic and you%26#039;ll be okay.computer

What kind of plants/flowers should I plant?

I just bought a new home and it needs a lot of landscaping/yard renovations. So I will be basically starting with nothing. What kind of plants would be good to plant that would look good all year round? I live Ohio and the front of the house gets a lot of sun! Please Help!
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersI don%26#039;t live in the same zone as you but I am going through the same thing. There are lots of evergreen care free plants and shrubs. I bought a book specific to my area and it has come in handy. I reccomend you buy one or check one out at your library. You want evergreen carefree perennials. Like I said, I don%26#039;t know about your zone, but daylilies are nice if you want flowers, and there are small and taller ones. Hostas are very nice evergreen plants. They do flower but you can snip those off if you don%26#039;t like them. Most people think you can only plant hostas in shade but there are many full sun species also. Hostas are good because you can buy small ones and in a season they will be amazingly larger and will grow to be 2-3 feet tall and wide. Liriope is nice, it is like an ornamental grass. It also starts small and grows fast. And all of these are basically plant%26#039;em and forget%26#039;em plants. Dianthus is a nice draught tolerant flowering plant and you can find them with almost any color flower. They are short. Ajuga is nice for a ground cover. If you go to a nursery or even a home improvement place the plants have the information you need to know on them and the people who work there can be helpful. If you go to lowes.com they have a garden planner that gives you a list of plants for your particular zone and sun exposure. It lets you design you whole yard. You have to register but it is free. Good Luck!

Does anyone know of a website/book/whatever that has pictures of plants and flowers?

I%26#039;m looking for some kind of reference material with color photos of plants and flowers to get ideas for landscaping my yard. It would also be helpful if it had garden info for the plants. I live in southern Indiana, so it could be specific for this region (or not...I%26#039;m not really worried as much about that).
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersWell... Go to google and search for places that have whatever you want
Reply:you can google your questions or go to your local greenhouse or botanist and ask them what would be ideal.
Reply:Hi,

For something different and relatively easy to create (big or small) go to: www.japzengardens.org

and visit:

If this is not what you are looking for just go to Google and type: Pictures of Flowers or Pictures of Gardens or Pictures of hanging baskets etc., etc into the search box.

You will get lots of inspiration and heaps of ideas.

Why is the latest weather in los angeles california killing all the plants and flowers?

why is the weather taking down all the plants and flowers? its been quite cold lately, does anyone know why it effects them? i woke up this yesterday moring and i saw ice on cars and dead flowers.....what is going on? how does the cold weather affect them?
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersWater is one of the only (perhaps the only) substance that is less dense as a solid than it is as a liquid. That%26#039;s why ice floats. Now, as water freezes, the molecules become more orderly, spaced apart, structured...less dense. Fill up a container all the way with water, freeze it...you%26#039;ll notice the ice is above the original level. Now imagine instead of a container, it was a cell (plant cell, human tissue cell, etc.)...you get the picture?Soles

What are some good plants/flowers to plant?

Right now in my front flower bed I have Zinnias, they are the border beauty series I think and I would like to have something in the fall that has pretty flowers on them. Any good suggestions? Also I live in Texas so its pretty hot right now.
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersThere are plenty of %26quot;winter%26quot; bloom options for you in North Texas. Chrysanthemums, marigolds, mums
Reply:Plastic ones. You don%26#039;t have to water them and you don%26#039;t have to worry about the temperature.
Reply:Mums are a beautiful fall flower. They are also fairly inexpensive.www.poetry.com

Plants/flowers for hanging baskets?

I want to use plants that will last all summer without creating loads of work for myself..any ideas...they are for hanging baskets.
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy Flowerstrailing petunias - they comes in all colours and some have scent. Any garden centre will sell them but dont put them in baskets yet until you have pinched out top to get a well established strong growth. combined with trailing ivy it should look great and all you need to do is to feed them

miraclegrow (my daughter uses tomorite )once a week (or when i remember) and of course they will last longer if you deadhead them
Reply:I have had great luck with baskets I made with fan flowers, sweet potato vines and African daisies. I had blooms all summer and only had to water them. I have included sites to show these flowers. Good luck.

Reply:Can%26#039;t go wrong with busy lizzies and pansies even I can keep them alive.
Reply:Fuschias

allysum

begonias

spider plants are super easy

lobelia

coleus

Some of what I remember my parents doing .We had tons of them on our patio. Frogs would find them and live in them!
Reply:You can get hanging strawberries I believe. You get flowers and a lovely treat too!
Reply:Trailing lobelia

allisum

petunias

gypsophillia

busy lizzies

geraniums

all look good
Reply:As hanging baskets need watering at least once a day during the summer I suggest you use geraniums (Pelargonium type, not the perenial cranesbill type)

Geraniums need very little water to survive so it wont matter if you forget. There are are 2 main types. Upright zonal geraniums which you can plant in the middle of the basket and trailing ivy leaf geraniums which can be planted around the edge to trail down. They come in pink, red mauve and white.
Reply:Avoid Petunias because they go slimey and have to be dead headed every day. Pelagoniums are good with fuschia and trailing lobelia.
Reply:There are dozens of plants that will hang over the sides of a basket. Petunias, pansies will bloom through the summer if you want flowers and you are in the sun. You could plant snapdragons in the center and have great color pots.

Remember you will be watering often.
Reply:try some frens, a bost fern is nice , doesnt need too much sun, and is a common hanging basket.

or try a moon vine. moon vines are vines that are perennials in warmer regions. they make a beautful fragrant flower that can smell the entire yard up, but is not overpowering. they are vines and grow large so you may need to cut the leave off when it getts too large.

also this one ONLY blooms before sunset, during the night, and until about 6 am
